ABOUT US

The National Clearinghouse on Families & Youth explains positive youth development in this way:

“…Positive Youth Development approach suggests that helping young people to achieve their full potential is the best way to prevent them from engaging in risky behaviors. Organizations and communities that promote Positive Youth Development give youth the chance to exercise leadership, build skills and get involved. The self-confidence, trust, and practical knowledge that young people gain from these opportunities help them grow into healthy, happy, self-sufficient adults.”

The Positive Youth Development approach has shown positive results across our country in the past decade. Communities that provide caring adults, safe places, a healthy start, effective education and opportunities for its youth have found that their young people:

  • do better in school;
  • are more likely to pursue a higher education;
  • enjoy better relationships with peers and family;
  • are less likely to engage in risky behaviors;
  • and, are 5 to 10 times more likely to become productive citizens in their communities.

That is a formula for success that we want for the future leaders in our state and region!
